Locals show how it's done

THE junior State round was held at Scarborough on the weekend.

The conditions were very small one to two foot with a constant off-shore breeze.

Many Margaret River surfers were entered with a very strong showing.

In the under 12 boys Jack Robinson won an entertaining final where he had to claw back the lead from Geraldton surfer James Fleming.

With variable peaks coming into the competition area Jack showed some good strategy going from a right peak in the middle of the area to a left on the extreme south of the bank.

In the under 14 boys Creed McTaggart excelled scoring a 9.50 and a 9.27 to combo the pack.

He surfed with speed and strong leg power to pull off impressive manoeuvres.

Jack Robinson doubled up from his under 12 final to come second.

Third was taken out by Areef Walker.

The stylish goofy footer competing in his first State round showed he has what it takes.

The fourth position went to Jye Perkins from Kalbarri.

The under 16 and under 18 girls and boys finals were postponed due to lack of surf.

In the under 18 boys Matt Baldock is in the final after easily taking out his semi with an 8.67 and 8.33.

Others in the final are Todd Quartermaine and Jerome Forrest (Mandurah) and Leeuwin Bancroft (Triggs).

Others in the under 18s were Jethro Hedstrom, knocked out in the quarters lacking good waves, and Blake McDonald suffered the same fate in the first round.

The under 16 boys Creed McTaggart made the final against Mitch Nesbitt (Cottesloe), Jake Fawcett (Geraldton) and Lachlan Magguchelli (Mandurah).

Jaxon Chadwick from Margaret River made the semis in the under 16s which was impressive for his first State round.

Also competing from Margaret River was Hugh Forward and Jackson Res.

In the under 16 girls the McAulay sisters made the final with Felicity Palmateer (Trigg).

In the under 18 both Laura and Bronte McAulay are in the final against Lech Wright and Erica Trother (Kalbarri).

Tamika Hogan made her debut in a state round and will be better for the experience.

All these finals will be surfed before the State round in Mandurah.

A good decision with the surf dropping and a placing more of a lottery than a display of skill.

Thanks to all the parents who took their kids to Perth for this round.

Eighteen surfers from Margaret River in a field of 98 is a strong showing.

Nominations for the high school surf comp were taken this week with the comp set for March 22 for bodyboards and March 23 for surfboards.

This comp will help in selecting the high school team for the regional final against Busselton High School and Mackillop College in May.

Keep Surfing,
