Boardriders do it Australian style
THE Annual Margaret River Boardriders Australia Day Competition
was held on Saturday at the Rivermouth
This year the Comp was sponsored by Cult Surfwear through their
State distributor Vincent Kennard-Davis, who supplied the club with
heaps of prizes designed with Australian flags all over them.
Good onya Vincent, thanks heaps.
The turnout was excellent with Club members from 12 years old
(Hannah Massie and Shaun Green) through to members in their mid 40s
(B-rad) there for the event.
As well as all the club members, heaps of local surf identities
where there also, with a crowd of up to 60 there to watch, help
judge and join in on the fun and laughs throughout the day.
Annette Butcher as always was there manning the barbecue to provide
the crowd with cooked snaggers throughout the day, thanks Annette.
There were some amazing old surf crafts brought down to the comp for
the competitors to use, with Andrew Saint-Claire bringing the
greatest array of surf craft along, thanks Clairedog.
The surfing throughout the day was fantastic to say the least; some
heats saw competitors ripping up the Rivermouth rights, while in
other heats, some competitors tried their hardest to win the
wipe-out of the comp award.
In all, 40 surfers competed to make the two semi finals, which were
made up of the 12 highest scoring Surfers of the Day with the first
and second place getters from each semi going into the final.
The final four surfers were Russell Ord, Steve Kinney, Dino Adrian
and Owen Harper, all having surfed like demons throughout the day’s
competitions.
After 20 minutes of surfing in the final, when spectators saw some
of the best surfing of the day go down, it was Owen Harps who took
out the honours of being the Australia Day Champ from Dino Adrian
who won the “I was almost the Australia Day Champ Award”.
Russell Ord finished third with Steve Kinney rounding of the final
placegetters in fourth position.
Four other awards were presented on the day with Isabelle Woods
winning the Highest Placed Woman’s Award, Blake Edwards the Highest
Placed Junior Award, Rohan Annesley the Best Wipe Out Award and
Russell Ord the Best Tube Award with a stand-out, tube to head stand
combo.
The club would like to thank everyone who turned up for the
Australia Day Comp, for helping out with the running, judging and
making the day what it was, great fun and laughs.
The club’s next committee meeting is on Tuesday, February 7 at the
Zone Room at 7.30 pm with the next Club Comp being on the following
Sunday, February 10, meeting at the Rivermouth Carpark at 7.30 am.
See you all there.
Regards Rego, President, MRBC Inc.
